How Pet Insurance Works
Why You Need Pet Insurance

  • The average vet bill for a dog is more than $700
  • The average vet bill for a cat is more than $500
  • The average dog visits the vet 2.8 times per year, and the average cat visits the vet 2.1 times per year
  • Every 6 seconds a pet owner is faced with a vet bill of more than $1,000
  • A pet receives emergency medical care every 2.5 seconds in the U.S
  • 1 in 3 pets need emergency veterinary treatment every year
  • 1 in 3 dogs develop cancer and canine cancer treatment can cost thousands
  • Pet insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, so it’s imperative to have coverage prior to when an accident or illness occurs

Benefits of Lifetime 5,000

PetFirst’s Lifetime Accident & Illness plans offer coverage for accidents and illnesses, but also include the added coverage for breed-specific, congenital and chronic conditions. Many pets develop illnesses that can require long-term care like allergies, diabetes and cancer. Our Standard Accident & Illness plans cover these conditions within the first diagnosed year, but deem them pre-existing upon renewal. Our Lifetime Accident & Illness plans will cover these conditions for the rest of your pet’s life.

Lifetime 5,000 has a robust annual limit, which resets year-after-year, allowing you to protect your pet for their entire life for common incidents like cuts, torn nails, ear infections and upset stomachs to more severe conditions like foreign body ingestions, mass removals, broken bones and chronic diseases. With no per-incident limits, you can utilize your entire annual limit for one incident if you need to.

PetFirst waives the wait period for illnesses for adopters, which allows protection for your pet to begin at midnight EST following activation of the policy. This helps provide protection during that pivotal time of adjustment immediately following adoption. Many cats and dogs can break with an illness due to stress, and PetFirst provides coverage for those right away.

Benefits of Standard 500

PetFirst’s Standard 500 plan offers a low-cost alternative for those pet parents seeking introductory accident and illness coverage. This plan offers up to $500 per incident, which can help reimburse pet parents for common incidents like bite wounds, eye infections, poison ingestions and upper respiratory infections.

Coverage begins at midnight EST for accidents and illnesses. PetFirst waives the customary 14-day wait period for illnesses to help protect pets during what can be a stressful adjustment period.
